"The elevation of a culture can be measured directly by the numbers of its people working in the field of aesthetics."
- L. Ron Hubbard
Message from the Director
I hope you are enjoying the summer weather and making the most of the myriad of art fairs, concerts and other summer activities to showcase your work. As artists we all know there is a tremendous amount of creativity that goes into our craft to make our art become a reality. But perhaps an even greater challenge is getting others to view, hear or experience our art form. To succeed as an artist today, it is vital to have marketing skills and business savvy but the question is, where do you get this information? A good place to start is knowing and applying the Hubbard Management System and this is what EMA Artists USA promotes and teaches. If you would like to find out more, just get in touch.

Featured Artist of the Month: Doug Crowder
Doug Crowder is not only a Lawyer but also an Author of both Law and Science Fiction Fantasy books. He is also a recent winner of the Model of Admin Know-How program!
Please tell us a little bit about your art business.
I’m a writer, illustrator, lawyer, and Atlantologist (one who studies the legends of Ancient Atlantis).
All lawyers are also writers. We get paid to write motions, briefs, contracts and other legal documents. Most of us also are (or dream of being), fiction writers.
I’ve partly realized my dream by having several fiction pieces available from my website, crowderlaw.com and also at my website that is dedicated to my fiction West Atlantis.com.
My genre is Science-Fiction-Courtroom Drama. Some of my characters are young lawyers from the future continent of Atlantis, facing outlandish legal situations.
In general, how has the use of Mr. Hubbard's administrative technology impacted your business?
I've found it vital to meet each week and have a staff meeting to go over the stats, create a Battle Plan for the week and look at the conditions that need to be applied, along with doing Financial Planning, setting aside reserves and promo funds, and spending less than comes in. In short, the Hubbard Management System gives a framework to operate from.
What piece of Mr. Hubbard's administrative wisdom have you found particularly helpful in making your business successful?
The Organizing Board, which helps to set up a business so that the necessary functions are covered and coordinated with each other. With this, I can see what positions are needed, which are being correctly covered, and those which need to be filled or improved. Even in a one-person operation, there will be a number of different jobs that the one person does, and treating these as separate functions will help things run more smoothly.
As a successful art business owner, is there one really valuable tip that you would like our readers to take away with them?
Never give up. Hold onto your dreams. Don’t lose sight of the mountain. Do what you enjoy. Enjoy what you do. Celebrate your victories. Ignore the losses. Do something fun every day. Wear a bolo tie.
(Well, maybe that’s more than one, but you get the picture!)
You can find Doug online at his websites West Atlantis and Crowder Law.
Artists in Action
Leisa Collins
The Director of EMA Artists, Leisa Collins, was recently part of a four-artist spring show called “Color, Form and Rejuvenation” which was held in the historic Benton Park neighborhood of St. Louis MO. The show took place in Atelier 1879, a sought-after rustic-modern event space formally known as the Buggy House.
“Even though I operate on a national level and have now created paintings of homes and historic buildings in all 50 states, I think it is very important to stay connected and contribute to one’s local environment and the area where you live. Benton Park was one of the first neighborhoods of St. Louis, and the fact that we now own a fully restored Victorian home in the area further promotes my message that we need to save and respect our architectural legacy in this country.”

Poet's Corner
Watercolour Words
Translucent, yet bold.
Awash with fading sunrise.
Promising sunlit rain and
Silk-soft breezes.
Watercolour words.
Capturing silent moments
of Lifes’s breath and
Hope’s quiet sigh.
This poem is by EMA Artist member Barbara Anne Dunn, who also took the photo.
