"The artist injects theta into the culture. And without that theta, the culture becomes reactive."
- L. Ron Hubbard
Message from the Director
I hope you are enjoying the last of the summer weather and are making the most of art fairs, pop-up shows, concerts and other summer activities to showcase your work. The theme of this newsletter is about the artist injecting theta and aesthetics into the culture and I think you can agree with me that perhaps even more than ever, the world today needs the uplifting effect of the artist. As artists we all know there is a tremendous amount of creativity that goes into our craft but perhaps an even greater challenge is getting others to view, hear or experience our art form. To succeed as an artist today, it is vital to have marketing skills and business savvy, but the question is, where do you get this information? A good place to start is knowing and applying the Hubbard Management System and this is what EMA Artists USA promotes and teaches. If you would like to find out more, just get in touch.

Featured Artist of the Month: Torsten Keller
Torsten Keller is an artist, illustrator and graphic designer.
Please tell us a little bit about your art business.
For the past many years building my art business has taken me on a journey where I have been able to work on numerous different projects and for many different companies. I provide creative solutions to individuals and businesses utilizing my graphic design and illustration abilities. My favorite projects were those with a large illustration or painting component.
In general, how has the use of Mr. Hubbard's administrative technology impacted your business?
I joined the EMA Artists to improve my knowledge of Hubbard
administrative technology. I have already been using conditions in my business, but now I am learning how all the tools integrate and can be used as a whole to really structure and organize my business activities effectively.
What piece of Mr. Hubbard's administrative wisdom have you found particularly helpful in making your business successful?
The use of condition formulas have been the thing that I can always rely on. Following the steps in each formula always gets you out of a slump and forging ahead.
As a successful art business owner, is there one really valuable tip that you would like our readers to take away with them?
Keep improving your craft and keep implementing more and more of Mr. Hubbard’s administrative tools.

Astrid Reeves
Painter Astrid Reeves is in her third year of live, in-person art shows! We asked her to share her experiences, and here's what she has to say:
I have learned so much. I know what kind of shows to apply for to be able to reach the right audience for my art. A lot of it was trial and error. Most importantly, I just got myself out there and observed what worked and what didn't.
Another kind of show that I've been participating in more of this year is the indoor gallery show. I hear of these opportunities through my local art league and also other artists. At a recent show I won Honorable Mention for my painting "Laguna Beach at Sunrise." So exciting! I've always wanted to paint large abstract paintings and this painting was my first in that direction. It's 36" x 48" and I was very happy to see that it fit in my car so that I could transport it to the show easily.
Recently I participated in a two day outdoor show in Burke, Virginia. This was my third year attending this show. It's a family festival with pony rides and cotton candy but also many different types of vendors. The most fun thing at this show is to see children make a beeline for my tent and then just stand there and look around at all my colorful art. They say fun things like, "I want that one and that one and that one..." Often, they purchase my artwork. My youngest buyer this year was 4 years old. Another young lady purchased one of my paintings with her birthday money. She had just turned 11 and her mom told me she has a space on the wall in her bedroom where she hangs her art that she has collected so far. Wow! How fun is that? That's the youngest art collector I've ever known.

Curt Strickland
Playwright Curt Strickland has hit a career milestone! He has won the prestigious William Faulkner Literary Prize for his play, 1968.
In addition to this honor, the director of Curt's play, Speed Dating, weighed in on the performances:
Dear Mr. Strickland,
My name is Vince Umbrino, I'm a member of the Brewster Theater Company in Carmel, New York, and I recently had the privilege of directing your play, Speed Dating, for our annual Playwright's Festival. The festival was held this past weekend and I wanted to reach out and let you know that your piece, one of nine produced, was one of, if not the best received of those on offer. I wanted to reach out and let you know of this success since we were unable to meet during the festival itself.
I greatly appreciate the care with which you structured this deceptively simple story. Composing a play is extremely challenging, however I feel that composing short plays presents even greater challenges to a playwright. Very often one is faced with the need to dump out exposition quickly and awkwardly in order to explain to the audience what they should be feeling from moment to moment. Your play, through its setting and characters, both addressed this challenge and deftly swerved around it. It was so much fun to work on.
I was fortunate to work with a couple of our very talented actors (80 percent of directing is casting, I often say) who were able to bring such a delightful sense of charm and mania to the first half of the story, and balanced it out with some real breathtaking sweetness as we learn the true stories of Jesse's and Sara's previous partners. The way in which the audience was captivated, hanging on their every word by the end, was the kind of theater experience that keeps me going.
Thank you very much for submitting your play to us. I hope that we hear from you in the future.
Best regards,
Vince

Ariel Hawkins
Ariel Hawkins, photographer and entrepreneur, has successfully turned her family’s passion for BMX (Bicycle Motocross) racing into a lucrative side-venture, creating artistic merchandise for fellow enthusiasts. Here's what she had to say about a recent event:
We set up with USABMX for our very first official event this last weekend in Egg Harbor NJ and we had a ton of positive feedback and a killer weekend! Our Company’s name is HellfireBMX and this is our second year in business. This is a merchandise company that sells backpacks, shirts, sweatshirts, hats, cozies, tote bags and jewelry that is all geared towards the sport of Bicycle Moto Cross. We are having a ton of fun with this company!
I specifically used what I've learned from the Hubbard Management System about different levels of exchange during this event and when someone purchased anything from the shop, even if it was only a dollar, they got a free can cozie and bracelets for their children. I also “employed” several mom’s and kids to hand out business cards and stickers to get people over to our tent. In exchange for their work I gave them some merch!
You can read more about Ariel and all her adventures on her website, ArielHawkinsPhotography.com, and her Hellfire BMX marketplace.
