"When a work of painting, music or other form attains two-way communication, it is truly art."

- L. Ron Hubbard

Message from the Director

I hope you have gotten 2024 off to a good start. As artists we all know there is a tremendous amount of creativity that goes into our craft to make our art become a reality. But perhaps an even greater challenge is getting others to view, hear or experience our art form. It is common knowledge that with every profession, there is an exact skill set that must be learned and practiced. A vital aspect to this skill set, that is often overlooked, is having the tools to successfully run our art career as a business, thereby creating adequate compensation and the wherewithal to make a living from our labors. This is where L. Ron Hubbard’s management technology comes into play and it is what EMA Artists USA promotes and teaches. If you are not already a member, I urge you to find out more and become one.

Featured Artist of the Month: Janice King

Janice King is a self-taught visual artist who paints on canvas, creating works for individuals and businesses to foster connection and emotional enjoyment, and to beautify their environments. She also offers art products, such as prints, wearable art, tote bags, lifestyle, tech and home décor products.

Please tell us a little bit about your art business.

I started my art business in 2019 when I emerged as a self-taught visual artist at the age of 60. I was always creative since childhood, but had many stops. So, prior to 2019, I had not flourished in creativity.

I paint in acrylic on canvas. I started painting women that I admired or saw in my environment. In addition, I paint landscapes, flowers, and abstracts. About two years ago I decided to start designing clothing, as this is something I had wanted to do for a long time also. I was already on Fine Art America, which produces items from my paintings on demand such as prints, apparel, lifestyle and home decor. I’ve had many pop-up shops with my art and products from Fine Art America, but I really wanted to create and focus on my own clothing line.

I found an eco-friendly, company, Legaleriste. I select certain styles of clothing that I like that they offer, upload my artwork, and voila! They create wearable art on demand. I love creating wearable art and have had many sales. In December 2023, I accepted an invitation to do a Fashion Show of my wearable art at the Billie Holiday Theatre in New York. It went off without a hitch and it was fabulous! Also, in December I had a Pop-Up-Doorbuster sale (reduced prices) for my wearable art and sold several pieces and paintings.

My goal is to create art for the soul, uplifting the viewer and giving them joy, and creating beauty for the world. In addition, my goal is to have women dressed with a unique expression of creativity. In a time where women in particular are scantily dressed and lack the clothing that can make them feel good about themselves, donning Janice King’s wearable art restores class and elegance for Black Women.

In general, how has the use of Mr. Hubbard's administrative technology impacted your business?

The Hubbard Management System has given me the tools to understand how to handle my business on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.

What piece of Mr. Hubbard's administrative wisdom have you found particularly helpful in making your business successful?

Art and being creative is a joy in my life.

I am working towards more promotion and marketing in order to increase sales, in addition to flourishing and prospering.

The use of L. Ron Hubbard’s administrative technology had impacted my art business in a mighty way. It has allowed me to better understand how to run a business. Learning how to correctly do an Admin Scale, keeping stats and graphing my production has allowed me to look at my goals, working to achieve them, targets, Ideal Scene, and so on. I have also become solvent in my art business.

The Hubbard Management System has put me on a path of knowledge and application for my daily targets in achieving success.

As a successful art business owner, is there one really valuable tip that you would like our readers to take away with them?

All of the administrative wisdom I’ve learned from the Model of Admin Know-How Program (MAKH) has helped me.

As a successful art business owner, I would like to share a tip to everyone who reads this. Know that it is possible to be successful in this business, or any other. It does take hard work, determination and—for me particularly—focusing on doing what I love. Reach for Mr. Hubbard’s Management System, and you will see that you can learn and apply the tools necessary to succeed in business.

You can find Janice online at Legaleriste Wearable Art, Fine Art America, Facebook, and Instagram.

Artists in Action

Astrid Reeves

Astrid has been busy doing live art shows and creating new artwork. She is currently planning out 2024 for live art shows and making lots of sales. She’s also expanding her social media presence. In just a few weeks she’ll be setting up her booth in an 8-story building in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. This is a 7-week show and is very exciting.

You can find Astrid on her website, Facebook and Instagram.

Angel Kourkoulou

Angel paints in oil on canvas. She loves her art and works eight to twelve hours a day to produce her paintings. The piece pictured above is now traveling to its final destination in an amazing home in Taiwan!

Angel says: "When the collectors of your paintings tell you with tears in their eyes, that they see in your work what you envisioned as a painter, the emotion is indescribable. Not only because imagination meets common reality, but mainly because the vision of a spiritually healthy culture can be created through the enormous power of aesthetics, which art conveys."

You can find Angel on her website, Facebook and Instagram.

On the Lighter Side

This cartoon was created by EMA Artists USA member, Steve Gill, who spent 40 years traveling to shows all over the United States, selling his humorous artwork and making people laugh.
