"Because the artist deals in future realities, he always seeks improvements or changes in the existing reality. This makes the artist, inevitably and invariably,a rebel against the status quo."

- L. Ron Hubbard

Message from the Director

As artists we all know there is a tremendous amount of creativity that goes into our craft to make our art become a reality. Then there is the challenge of getting others to view, hear or experience our art form. It is common knowledge that with every profession, there is an exact skill set that must be learned and practiced. A vital aspect to this skill set, that is often overlooked, is having the tools to successfully run our art career as a business, thereby creating adequate compensation and the wherewithal to make a living from our labors. This is exactly what EMA Artists USA promotes and teaches, using the works of L. Ron Hubbard.

Featured Artist of the Month: Rachel Rausch-Johnson

Rachel Rausch-Johnson is the owner of Rachel Rausch Photography. She was recently celebrated with a gallery exhibition of her "40 Over 40" series, which celebrates the strength, wisdom and beauty of women in their 40s, 50s and 60s and beyond!  Of the show, Rachel says: "There was joy and tears, and a kinship revealed that they didn't know existed."

Please tell us a little bit about your art business.

I create contemporary portraits for business owners and families with a fashion magazine style. I started my business 25 years ago in Burbank CA. I am currently working on a portrait campaign called 40 over 40 – celebrating the strength, wisdom and beauty of women in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond. I hosted my first gallery style exhibit showcasing their portraits and sharing their stories. My work is not limited to women only. I’ve created portraits for musicians, singers, corporate staff, events and weddings. I am able to travel to any location for my clients. Nature is how I was first introduced to photography. I also have a line of wall art that is constantly being added to.

In general, how has the use of Mr. Hubbard's administrative technology impacted your business?

Since using the Hubbard Management System, I have been able to grow my business to 3x what I did before. There is order and prediction. It’s so much calmer, in the right places. The amount of work I’m doing is incredible. With the Admin tech, I am more able to handle the newfound workload that organizing my business has created. It’s been a game-changer. I can even take time off without worry! And when I do hit the inevitable "gopher hole," I know what to do to fix it and get going again without the annoying guesswork!

What piece of Mr. Hubbard's administrative wisdom have you found particularly helpful in making your business successful?

I would have to say creating and using my Organizing Board. Before my org board, my business duties were endless. ENDLESS. As in, working weekends, skipping outings, sleeping? No, doing something else other than work was out of the question. When I sat down and did the work to make the Organizing board, I discovered something: I didn’t have to do it all! I could create hats and OTHERS COULD DO THOSE JOBS! It was a bright light of hope for me.

As a successful art business owner, is there one really valuable tip that you would like our readers to take away with them?

You can’t lose if you do what Ron says.

Artists in Action

Katie Dean

One of our original EMA Artist members, Katie Dean, founder of her made in America line Katie Dean Jewelry hosted a local Mother’s Day Pop-Up in Clearwater, Florida, where she featured her bestselling Mama Collection. The event also featured local artisans and brands. You can see all the fun on Katie's Instagram.

Astrid Reeves

Astrid Reeves's vibrant interpretation of the world around is expressed in her bold paintings that capture the lively colors and swirling abstract forms of nature itself. Recently, Astrid had this to say about her experience with the Model of Admin Know-How program:

"I recently had a huge win. I had a phone call with Johnnie Ferro, the Model of Admin Know-How In-Charge, and he helped me to see that I was missing a major stat that reflected my paintings in the hands of happy customers. Suddenly everything fell into place for me. It was really cool! I sold a painting just a few days later! I hadn’t sold anything in a while so I was thrilled! I’m currently in three shows simultaneously which is a little stressful but also a lot of fun.

"This picture shows my husband helping me curate my pieces for the largest show I’ve ever done, Artomatic, which is seven weeks long and features over a thousand artists. Did I have it fully figured out when I signed up? No, I just wanted to do it and went for it, thanks to the support of the artists in my group and applying the Hubbard Management System!"

You can see Astrid's work on her website and Instagram.

Ariel Hawkins

Ariel Hawkins has been running her family photo business for over a decade. Her goal is to work with families to create the most exciting and FUN experience possible! Here's what she had to say about a recent photo session:

"I had been working with Adam closely via Zoom for the last few weeks about doing a surprise proposal with his girlfriend of five years at Niagara Falls, NY during the solar eclipse. There was a lot of energy and excitement when we got to the falls. My clients are from Philadelphia and drove in. Adam and I devised a plan so that Jen wouldn’t have any clue that this was happening. We walked from the Main Street onto Goat Island which overlooks the falls and settled on a spot off to the side. I managed to follow closely behind him without being noticed and once we got to the spot he got down on one knee and proposed. She was so happy she immediately started to cry. It was beautiful and really a once in a lifetime event."

You can read all about it on Ariel's blog, and you can find more of Ariel on her website and Instagram.
