ART, Chapter 4: Art in its Basics

Message from the Director

Effective Management Association Artists USA is dedicated to helping artists flourish and prosper. As stated by L. Ron Hubbard, “The artist has an enormous role in the enhancement of today’s and the creation of tomorrow’s reality.” No matter how talented, artists seldom make their living and receive fair exchange for their artistic works unless they have workable administrative and organizational tools to fall back on. With fierce competition in the art marketplace today, understanding marketing and promotion is also vital to success. That’s exactly where EMA Artists USA comes in. I urge you to become part of our movement. Read the successes below from our artist members so you can find out how much being a part of this team has benefited them in their artist endeavors.

Featured Artist of the Month: Playwright Curt Strickland

Curt recently took home the award for Best Play in the Pend Orielle Short Play Theater Festival. In addition to writing plays, Curt writes political essays and social commentary. He is also a landscape photographer, and a former owner at Great American Art, one of the largest commercial art companies in the nation.

Curt Strickland

YOU RECENTLY WON BEST PLAY AT THE PEND ORIELLE SHORT PLAY THEATER FESTIVAL. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THAT.

There were 80 submissions from around the globe. Eight were chosen to be produced, including mine, each play with its own actors and director. They rehearsed for three or four weeks and presented each play before a live audience three consecutive nights, in addition to its being lived streamed.

And the audience voted my play, Speed Dating, "best play." It was both gratifying and humbling, the impact it had on the audiences.

WHAT IMPACT ARE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE AS A PLAYWRIGHT?

I consider art a Fourth Dynamic activity. As artists, we have a responsibility to impact society, to impel action, promote healing. As part of the EMA artists group, we all work on our admin scales as a vehicle to expand our impact and reach as artists. As a playwright, this is my Valuable Final Product:

“A well-crafted play that has an emotional and thought-provoking impact, ignites action, is laced with prophecies, and serves as a vehicle for healing.”

I am inspired by a few quotes from L. Ron Hubbard in Science of Survival:

“The artist has an enormous role in the enhancement of todays and the creation of tomorrow’s reality…. The elevation of a culture can be measured directly by the number of its people working in the field of aesthetics.” (Page 480)

“Because the artist deals in future realities, he always seeks improvements or changes in the existing reality. This makes the artist, inevitably and invariably a rebel against the status quo. The artist, day by day, by postulating the new realities of the future, accomplishes peaceful revolution." (Page 481)

Mr. Hubbard has some strong opinions about artists, and their role in society. I take that responsibility seriously. In other words, I strive to be a professional in my craft. When I write, I seek to impel, inspire action, using the power of art to heal, inspire, provoke, challenge, offer hope, and most of all—to remind us of our common humanity.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR FUTURE PLANS.

Stories are the sacred offerings that nourish a culture, a nation. The soul of a nation resides in its stories. Ken Burns said, “stories liberate us from the tyrannies of the past.”

Inspired by one of America’s premier playwrights, August Wilson, I am working on a ten-play saga on America, it’s triumphs and tragedies, its heroes and villains. These are plays that seek to unearth and celebrate the nobility of the American character, asking the question, who are we?

My stories are about people straining for union, connections, justice. They are stories about discovering our shared humanity, with noble, heroic men and women, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, all striving for a more perfect union.

And finally, these are stories about things we believe in but can’t see: faith, hope, dreams and the soul.

BEING ONE OF THE EARLY MEMBERS OF THE EMA ARTISTS GROUP, WHY DO YOU THINK ARTISTS SHOULD JOIN THIS UNIQUE GROUP?

Since this group was started, the level of production of each member is off the charts. We hold each other accountable. It serves as a sanctuary for our collective souls, saturated in validation and affirmation for our beingness as artists.
